An environmental consulting and construction company was hired to test, filter and monitor groundwater around a bridge replacement project. Soil samples from the project location indicated high concentrations of heavy metals including arsenic, chromium, lead, and mercury. Regulators were concerned that groundwater encountered throughout the project would be contaminated after contact with the soil. Hauling the contaminated groundwater offsite for treatment and disposal would be expensive and inefficient. The company needed a creative solution for the problem.
Based on a referral, the contractor called E-Tank and E-Pump to supply an onsite storage and filtration system. On the strength of success with similar projects, E-Tank and E-Pump delivered a solution designed to remove the contaminants and meet strict target discharge limitations.
E-Tank and E-Pump configured a turnkey system consisting of liquid phase filtration equipment & media, sediment bag filters & particulate cartridge filters, flow metering equipment and a 21,000-gallon Certified Clean frac tank. The tank enabled the contractor to test, monitor and hold the contaminated groundwater for treatment onsite as needed. The filtration system utilized three medias (ion exchange clay, iron-infused alumina, and activated carbon) configured to allow for adequate contact time with the groundwater, effectively removing each contaminant. The filtration media vessels featured E-Pump’s unique manifold system, enabling the operator to fine-tune system flow.
Working alongside the contractor, E-Tank and E-Pump specialists installed the filtration system and informed project managers on how best to operate the system providing an efficient, cost-effective and customized solution.
